Sometimes, but there is no universal yes/no answer. Vehicle wheelbase, turning circle, body length, door width and where the hard opposite boundary sits all change the swept path. Use the simulator with your dimensions and keep a real safety margin.
Backing changes which end of the vehicle leads the maneuver and can change how the body corners sweep around the garage jamb. The benefit depends on the vehicle and layout, so compare both modes.
Use body width for the main geometry model, then separately verify mirror clearance. Mirrors do not follow the exact body-corner envelope and may fold on some vehicles.
